Insane HOA Rulings
While the majority of home owner associations are good groups of people that make sound decisions regarding their communities, there are also a few out there that seem to make incredibly silly decisions, and one can only wonder what their neighbors think of them. Just imaging the over the back fence conversations about some of these would be more than amusing. Maybe.
1. In Virginia, a 90 year old veteran was told that he had to remove an unapproved flag pole from his front yard. He was flying the American flag. The man fought in World War II and was decorated for taking on three Nazi tanks. It wasnt until several member of Congress and the Obama administration took up his cause, that his flag could officially fly again.
2. In California a man ended up losing his home because he planted too many roses. Seems that was against the HOA rules for landscaping. He fought it in court, lost, and ending up paying 70K in legal fees and then lost his home to foreclosure.
3. A for sale sign caused a woman in Tennessee to be reprimanded for a breach of contract. The board cited rules prohibiting signs, banners or billboards. She was forced to take it down.
4. An elderly couple in Florida tried assume guardianship of their granddaughter - age 6 - after her mother was declared unfit. The retirement community refused the child based on the grounds that she was neither over 55 or retired. The couple tried to sell their home even after cutting its price in half. They are being sued by the HOA and the child is now in the states care.
5. A condo in Southern California had a rule that all dogs had to be carried through the lobby area. A geriatric woman who walks with a cane was repeatedly find for not carrying the dog and was forced to move.
Unfortunately, there are incidents like this all over the country which is making some people pretty angry and disgusted at HOAs.
